Eckerd Family Foundation and the Florida Coalition for Children are
partnering with the Department of Children and Families to establish the
Butterworth Endowment. The purpose of the endowment is to provide
individuals, agencies, and corporations the opportunity to donate funds to
assist youth formerly in foster care achieve their educational goals.
Funds from the endowment will be used to cover costs not covered by other
sources. Admirers of Bob Butterworth will be able to honor him and support
youth in the most meaningful way.
When youth exit foster care at age 18, they must navigate the adult world
without the support and guidance of a family. Government resources are
very limited. There is little room for mistakes and less time to learn
life skills. These young adults formerly in foster care must transition to
adulthood much more quickly than the average young person. The Butterworth
Foundation will help to meet their needs when government and/or private
programs are insufficient.
Collaboration and partnership with public and private agencies were
hallmarks of Mr. Butterworth's tenure as Secretary of the Department of
Children and Families. That is why it is so appropriate for Eckerd Family
Foundation to launch the endowment with a contribution of $10,000. Their
contribution is just one of many in service to children and youth at risk
in Florida. Jane Soltis, Vice President is the Chair of the statutorily
mandated Independent Living Services Advisory Council. Interim Secretary
George Sheldon remarked, "Jane Soltis and Eckerd Family Foundation are very
good friends to the Department and the children we serve."
The Florida Coalition for Children will administer the endowment. The
Department's partners, the community-based care agencies that comprise the
Foundation are Florida's child welfare service providers. The Coalition is
the perfect home for fiscal management of the Butterworth Endowment and
because their members serve these youth in need.
